About the job:
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Software Developer in the Information and Cyber Security Centre within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to research, design, develop and evaluate secure desktop, server, and mobile applications using a variety of technologies and programming languages and cyber security best practices for software development. S/He will further be responsible for administration, configuration and maintenance of different cyber security infrastructures, systems, and tools in line with various technical Research and Development (R&D) projects. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:
- Research new developments in the cyber security space, and apply these findings to outline potential solutions, applications, processes and guidelines;
- Research and develop on related aspects of software and network security in government, military and civilian contexts;
- Implement and review cybersecurity architecture and processes across multiple cybersecurity domains;
- Lead and manage technical projects;
- Assess, evaluate and update diverse cyber security systems and products across multiple technology environments against vulnerabilities and threats;
- Design and develop secure software applications and components for internal projects, concept demonstrations, and solutions for clients;
- Contribute to the assessment and audits of cybersecurity software technologies;
- Compile research findings, reports and other documentation, for delivery to clients and for internal use;
- Support the design, development and/or piloting of emerging cybersecurity technologies;
- Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver multiple projects and solve multiple information and cyber security challenges through software development;
- Prepare, review, and publish reports, cybersecurity advisories and articles in local and international forums;
- Coach and mentor young software developers.
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science/engineering or related fields with at least four years’ experience in software development;
- Experience in the following is essential:
- Software Engineering Principles;
- Software Development;
- Cyber Security/Information Security to develop subsystems or part of overall systems/solutions/products;
- Technical leadership of information and cyber security projects;
- Secure software development lifecycle and related best practices;
- Mobile apps development;
- Windows and Linux development;
- Cybersecurity and Software Engineering certifications will be advantageous;
- Must be proficient in and/or adaptability to other programming languages such as but not limited to C#, PHP, Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL;
- Advanced knowledge of software development security practices related to web security, infrastructure security, database security, and applications security;
- Knowledge of different software development frameworks (i.e. DevOps, etc);
- Understanding of research and development processes;
- Good verbal and written communication;
- Oriented to customer service orientation and attention to detail;
- Ability to work across diverse information and cyber security domains;
- Ability to solve challenging and complex technical security problems;
- Ability to innovate and create new solutions for current cyber security problems;
- Ability to plan, prioritise and time management;
- Ability to work independently in a team context;
- Ability to take ownership of own career and development;
- Ability to stay current in own field;
